Artist Statement

Each figurative sculpture is inspired by a live model. I tend to capture the human moment and the beauty of the body's twist. I want to create an intimate relationship between the viewer and the subject. Through the use of pose, body language and mood, I want to focus the viewer's gaze on the subject so that they can allow themselves to connect or to react. I am interested in the fact that this reaction speaks as much to the viewer's own feelings and experiences as to those they interpret in the subject they are regarding. In this collection I celebrate the human form in a few of its countless manifestations. The poses range from classic and demure, to contemporary and playful, with deviations into the striving athletic and abstract impressionistic. The absence of even a single straight line portends the infinite complexity of human morphology. I am perpetually fascinated by the subliminal turn of a slender neck, the exquisite rotation of a wrist, the eternally haunting topography of a breast and the graceful silhouette of a young face in pensive introspection. Other pieces explore the limbless potential of the torso alone to evoke mood and meaning, and the impressionistic space of a garment whose shape is defined by the body in absentia.
