Tonya Hart

Artist Statement
In her sculptures she explores the perceptions of nature as muse, as source of inspiration, manipulation and transformation. For example, Canis Familiaris seeks to represent the 'domesticated dog' as defined by zoologists to be descendant of canis lupus, the common wolf. Thereby, all four hundred breeds of domesticated dog are not considered a distinct species, rather aberrations brought about through artificial selection. As follows, the sculpture shows a dog with one of its hind legs in the scale of a wolf, taking a grand leap with the body of a Chihuahua. 'When You Were Born the World Was Born With You' explores the perception of species and environment as interdependent. Both works appeared in her debut solo exhibition at the Canadian Sculpture Centre in 2009, titled Sleeping with the Muse.
